A TV series based on the bloody Japanese movie Battle Royale is rumoured to be in the works. The controversial film was released in 2000, and sees a class of schoolchildren forced to battle to the death on an uninhabited island. A critically-panned sequel was released in 2003, and the same subject matter was explored in a little story called The Hunger Games.
Battle Royale, the TV series, is reportedly in the works at the CW television network, but there’s no word yet on how much the violence will be toned down. A big screen American remake of the film has been stuck in development hell for several years.
