Here’s the first trailer for Jack Reacher, the new action movie that stars Tom Cruise as a gritty cop who beats the crap out of bad guys with his bare hands. The character was created by British author Jim Grant, and has appeared in more than a dozen novels over the last 15 years. The film is based on the ninth Jack Reacher story, One Shot, which was first published in 2005.

Jack Reacher is being written for the screen and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the screenwriter behind The Usual Suspect, Valkyrie, and the upcoming fantasy adventure Jack the Giant Killer. It’ll punch its way to theatres on December 21.
