According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel has chosen Super director James Gunn to helm the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Talks are currently underway, and the studio apparently likes Gunn’s ability to blend comedy with action, not to mention the fact that he’s a big comic book fan. Anyone who’s seen Super also knows that Gunn is skilled at executing clever and witty dialogue, similar to The Avengers director Joss Whedon. Guardians of the Galaxy is due for release on August 1, 2014.
James Gunn also wrote the recent video game Lollipop Chainsaw, and you can watch our interview with him about that by clicking here.
Like The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy will unite several different Marvel heroes. As you can tell from the concept art above, they’re all aliens, and are less-mainstream and than anything Marvel has attempted to bring to theatres before. From left to right:
Drax the Destroyer – a human brought back to life as an alien assassin
Groot – a walking tree-man
Star-Lord – a human/alien space policeman
Rocket Raccoon – a gun-toting raccoon
Gamora – an assassin and last surviving member of her race
The death-loving villain Thanos, who appeared briefly at the end of The Avengers, is likely to appear in the film given that he’s an important villain in the Guardians of the Galaxy comics. He might also appear in The Avengers 2, which will hit theatres on May 1, 2015.
