It’ll be at least another year before gamers can return to the Final Frontier, because the next Star Trek game will not hit consoles until 2013.
The game, simply titled Star Trek, is based on the 2009 J.J. Abrams film and its upcoming sequel. Publishers Paramount and Namco Bandai have confirmed that it’s set to arrive in the first half of 2013, before the new film beams down on May 17. The game and the film were originally set to arrive this summer.
Players will take the role of Captain James T. Kirk and Chief Science Officer Spock on a mission to save Earth, and the galaxy, from destruction at the hands of an unknown alien race. The project is being developed by Ontario-based studio Digital Extremes, which worked on Bioshock 2, Unreal Tournament, Dark Sector and The Darkness II. The film’s screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are serving as consultants on the story.
Plot details on the new movie are being kept a secret, but the project has already begun shooting.
In related news, Hasbro has announced at Toy Fair that it will create a line of KRE-O building sets based on the new Star Trek film. Expect the new toys to hit stores next year.
