Star Trek Sequel Villain Revealed?

The new Star Trek movie has already finished shooting, but very few details about the film have been announced. The world still doesn’t know the title, anything about the plot, or who Benedict Cumberbatch’s main villain will be, but now one of those questions may have been answered.

Speaking with SFX, co-star Karl Urban let slip that Cumberbatch is playing the troubled Starfleet officer Gary Mitchell. This contradicts earlier rumours that the main bad guy would be the genetically-modified madman Khan, and there’s no word if Urban was being serious, or just pulling everyone’s leg.

For those who haven’t spent a lot of time in the final frontier, Gary Mitchell was the villain in the second Star Trek pilot episode, titled Where No Man Has Gone Before. He’s given supernatural powers and intelligence after coming in contact with a strange energy field, and he eventually gets too powerful for his own good. If Benedict Cumberbatch really is playing Gary Mitchell, don’t be surprised if another newcomer, Alive Eve, plays his lover Dr. Elizabeth Dehner.

The new Star Trek movie, whatever it’s called, will beam down on May 17, 2013.
