After years of back and forth political arguments, Australians have finally been granted the ability to purchase adult rated games. It’s time to throw a street party.
Australia’s new R18+ classification is the equivalent to the ESRB’s “M” rating and PEGI’s 18 rating.
“These are important reforms over 10 years in the making,” said Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare. ”The R18+ category will inform consumers, parents and retailers about which games are not suitable for minors to play and will prevent minors from purchasing unsuitable material.”
It’s ridiculous that in this modern era a country like Australia, that allows adult rated movies, would ban games of the same rating. Australians have been forced to miss many major releases as a result of this rating not being in place. Luckily it is now in place and should mean that the country no longer has to witness some of the industry’s most anticipated titles being banned. The passing of the law now means that video games are on an equal footing with movies and other media in the country.
