UPDATE: Deadline reports that I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence has won the match, and will be the director of Catching Fire.
Original Story:
The producers behind The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire have been desperately searching for a director following the departure of the original film’s Head Gamemaker Gary Ross. According to the LA Times, the search has been narrowed down to two potential tributes; Moneyball director Bennett Miller, and I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence. It remains to be seen which one will be named the winner.
Gary Ross departed the sequel after deciding that the film’s production schedule would be too tight. It’ll need to begin shooting this fall in order to make its planned release date of November 22, 2013. Jennifer Lawrence will be back in the lead role of Katniss Everdeen, joining the fight against the oppressive nation state of Panem. The screenplay is being penned by Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins and Slumdog Millionaire screenwriter Simon Beaufoy.
