Ouya Nears $5 Million from Kickstarter

Even though the Ouya console is currently surging towards an impressive $5 million on its Kickstarter drive, the developers behind the Android-powered system are still looking for even more backing outside of the crowd sourcing website. According to Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman, it’s going take extra money from other partners to the Ouya another huge push.

In an interview with Develop, Uhrman particularly noted that the costs would be high, and the more partners they have, the better:

“This is a really big undertaking and it’s going to be expensive,” said Uhrman.

“We’re looking for additional funds of money but more importantly we wanted to take it to Kickstarter regardless. Because Kickstarter will give us the support we need from the gamers and developers to get additional content on the devices and bring additional partners to us.

Although it’s not directly meant to complete with the PS3, Xbox 360, and the PC, the reality is that the Ouya will be forced into that comparison, and as such, the funding that’ll take will be substantial. Reading between the lines, it seems like Team Ouya has gone from using their Kickstarter money to do small-scale production to pursuing large scale mass marketing.

If that’s the case, expect Ouya to announce a partnership with a major electronics group or something along those lines later on this year. Five million is a good start, but all it takes is an investment deal from a private company or single entrepreneur to really boost the console’s potential success.
