PlayStation 3 Sales Up but Profits Down Following Price Cut

THE BUZZ: Sony has announced an increase in sales of both PlayStation 3 and PSP hardware sales for the quarter ending September 30, however the division as a whole posted a drop in sales revenue and an operation loss.

The company sold 3.7 million PS3s and 1.7 million PSPs during the three month period, a year on year increase, and also sold 37.4 million PS3 software units. The Consumer Products and Services division, which includes Sony’s PlayStation, TV, video, digital imaging, PC and mobile businesses, posted an operating loss of 34.6 billion yen and sales revenue dropped 12.3 percent year on year to 779.7 billion yen.

EGM’s TAKE: The price cut worked for Sony as sales increased, and the operating loss may have been due to other sectors of the division not necessarily the PlayStation 3 and PSP hardware. Can you say next gen development?
